"Rebuilding" Updates

Building progress updates

North & South — May 11

Written By: jgaston - May• 12•12

These photos show further developments on the way to completing the construction of the exterior of the entire building:

The North (Sanctuary) Wall

The new Cross / Crucifix will be situated in the middle of the stained glass window on the north wall. This more clearly seen in this photo taken from the rectory. There will be three exterior surfaces: red brick, white/gray ground face block (around the base) and metal panels (white insulated area) front and back center.

New (South) Facade and Entrance

Here you can see where the footer has been laid to support the steel beams in the new south entrance to the building. There will be three doors in the main entrance to facilitate entry and exit into the narthex.

The new slate shingles (see the old brown shingles protruding from the current narthex?) are now being added last week and this coming week.

(Could this be the end of buckets in the aisle? Maybe they could be enshrined as a memorial of the past!)

Front Demo – May 1

These pics show the demolition of the old front entrance to the Church.

It will be replaced with a new facade that will look like this:

Interior Work Continues

Written By: jgaston - Apr• 25•12

Larger and more detailed photos show the work going on in the interior of the worship space.

The Choir Area (Risers will eventually be placed in this section)

The East Entrance Corridor (connection of new construction to the current narthex on the left)

Looking toward the Sanctuary area (Baptistry / Font at lower left located at the entrance into the worship space)

The Saint Margaret Mary Window (will be lit up at night and can be seen from Leechburg Road)

Left Front Wall / Windows / Ceiling

Ready for the new Reconciliation Room?

Old Beam in the New Worship Space (Steel Beams will support folding glass panels separating the worship space from the narthex)

Old Church Entrance looking toward the new worship space. This temporary wall will eventually come down and the space will be the new narthex, gathering space

Concrete Floor Poured in Worship Space

Written By: jgaston - Apr• 12•12

The concrete trucks began appearing before dawn today, April 12, and by mid-day the concrete floor of the worship space was poured and set in place. FYI, 18 trucks delivered 180 square yards of concrete for this one project! As you can see from these photos, the new worship space is taking shape and is a wonderfully expansive area.

It has been impressive to see the vast array of skilled workers arriving for each phase of the building project. Looks like they did a tremendous job for us today!

Christ has Died…Christ is Risen!

Written By: jgaston - Apr• 06•12

While there may be photos of the new worship space being built here, there is no snapshot that would capture the overwhelming event of Christ Risen from the Dead. We rely on the best artists of all time for images that sustain Easter faith in the People of God!

This rendering by the Spanish painter El Greco (one of my favorites!) can offer us much to ponder this Easter.

A Blessed Easter to All (as we wait in expectation)!

“Raising the Roof!”

Written By: jgaston - Apr• 02•12

These photos show the addition of the second, four inch, layer of the roof which will be completed this week. The final layer will be the shingles…date to be determined sooner or later depending on the weather. (Please excuse my thumb in the Park Drive photo. I couldn’t figure out how to edit it out. You get the picture, it’s only a gorgeous blue sky!)

Next major step: pouring of the concrete floor for the entire addition. It could come within the next week or two. We need optimum weather conditions to make sure that it will be installed properly. It will be visible — as the entire floor of the worship space, other than the sanctuary, will be stained and polished concrete.

St. Margaret Mary window cut out

Written By: jgaston - Mar• 19•12

These two photos show the place where the new Saint Margaret Mary window will be positioned on the upper facade. As mentioned earlier, the intent is that this window will be lit up at night and will be visible from Leechburg Road.

The current entrance will be removed and a new entrace added. You can get a glimpse of this in the architect’s rendering which is the Logo for this blog above.

March 15 – Facade Developing, etc.

Written By: jgaston - Mar• 15•12

This March 15 photo shows work being done on the new upper front wall facing Leechburg Road. A 7′ Saint Margaret Mary stained glass window will be placed in the center section that remains open. The exterior surface will be covered in metal panels to provide visual contrast with the otherwise red brick that will encase the entire building.

FYI, the current roof is only the base for another 4″ roofing system that will be added, followed by shingles. So, no, we are not having a “tin” roof on the new Church. Otherwise we would most likely continue a venerable parish tradition of placing buckets in the aisles in the new worship space! NOT!!!!

A Quiet Saturday “Walk Through” – March 3

Written By: jgaston - Mar• 05•12

Last Saturday morning, I walked through the construction site when no one was around just to get my own feel for what has been going on. These photos give you some idea of what I saw outside, basement, upstairs:

Old and New Merging

Written By: jgaston - Feb• 29•12

In this 2/28/12 photo taken from the rectory, you can see the relationship and size of the new worship space to the former worship space. The “old” worship space that remains will become the gathering space or new “Narthex” that leads into the new worship space. It will have many uses, including overflow seating for special occasions and holidays.

This photo gives some sense of how small the older space was in relation to what will be the new.

Thought you’d enjoy this perspective!
